Break Dancing is a performance that features acrobatic feats that test the dancer’s strength and skill. This artistic dance style features break dancers, or B-Boys, doing head stands, spins, fancy footwork, tumbles, and hand stands.
This site is dedicated to showing dancers that nothing is impossible. Here, they can learn the techniques needed to build their strength, confidence, stamina, coordination, and flexibility so that they can kill it on the floor. Both B-Boys and B-Girls are under a lot of stress due to the competitive battle culture, where they are constantly critiqued and judged on their moves. The dancer’s mental strength is just as important as their physical strength, and this site will provide them with tips and information on building themselves up.
How Breakdancing Started
B-boying, a form is street dancing, originated in the 70’s in New York mainly by young Puerto Rican and African Americans. It consists of top/ up rock, footwork, spinning moves, and freeze, but also is based on your own self expression. The name “B-boy” or “B-boying” was made up by Kool Herc.
It is also called ‘breaking’ and ‘break-dancing’, but most true b-boy dancers do not prefer the name ‘break-dancing’, as the name was created by the media. The ‘b’ in ‘b-boying’ stands for “break”, which refers to the break in a record, or when the beat drops. (Exciting and high energy danceable section of the music)
B-boying really is a form of art. Some say you feel like you can see a man or woman’s soul vibrating to the music as they dance. To be a true b-boy requires passion, and being accepted as a true b-boy dancer is considered a major honor of the hip-hop community.
The articles and videos provided will show dancers proper exercises and moves that will help develop their bodies and give them the skills they need to achieve their goals as a B-Boy or B-Girl.
